چکیده

In maintaining consistencies, such as GAC*, FDGAC* and weak EDGAC*, for global cost functions, Weighted CSP (WCSP) solvers rely on the projection and extension operations, which entail the computation of the cost functions’ minima. Tractability of this minimum computation is essential for efficient execution. Since projections/extensions modify the cost functions, an important issue is tractable projection-safety, concerning whether minimum cost computation remains tractable after projections/extensions. In this paper, we prove that tractable projection-safety is always possible for projections/extensions to/from the nullary cost function (W∅), and always impossible for projections/extensions to/from n-ary cost functions for n ≥ 2. When n = 1, the answer is indefinite. We give a simple negative example, while Lee and Leung’s flow-based projectionsafe cost functions are also tractable projection-safe. We propose polynomially decomposable cost functions, which are amenable to tractable minimum computation. We further prove that the polynomial decomposability property is unaffected by projections/extensions to/from unary cost functions. Thus, polynomially decomposable cost functions are tractable projection-safe. We show that the SOFT AMONG, SOFT REGULAR, SOFT GRAMMAR and MAX WEIGHT/MIN WEIGHT are polynomially decomposable. They are embedded in a WCSP solver for extensive experiments to confirm the feasibility and efficiency of our proposal.

Filtering Decomposable Global Cost Functions

As (Lee and Leung 2012) have shown, weighted constraint satisfaction problems can benefit from the introduction of global cost functions, leading to a new Cost Function Programming paradigm. In this paper, we explore the possibility of decomposing global cost functions in such a way that enforcing soft local consistencies on the decomposition achieves the same level of consistency on the origin...

Consistency Techniques for Flow-Based Projection-Safe Global Cost Functions in Weighted Constraint Satisfaction

Many combinatorial problems deal with preferences and violations, the goal of which is to find solutions with the minimum cost. Weighted constraint satisfaction is a framework for modeling such problems, which consists of a set of cost functions to measure the degree of violation or preferences of different combinations of variable assignments. Typical solution methods for weighted constraint s...

Minimization of locally-de ned submodular functions by optimal soft arc consistency

Submodular function minimization is a polynomially-solvable combinatorial problem. Unfortunately the best known general-purpose algorithms have high-order polynomial time complexity. In many applications the objective function is locally-de ned in that it is the sum of cost functions (also known as soft or valued constraints) whose arities are bounded by a constant. We prove that every Valued C...

Decomposable Constraints

Many constraint satisfaction problems can be naturally and efficiently modelled using non-binary constraints like the “all-different” and “global cardinality” constraints. Certain classes of these non-binary constraints are “network decomposable” as they can be represented by binary constraints on the same set of variables. We compare theoretically the levels of consistency which are achieved o...

Tractability-preserving transformations of global cost functions

Graphical model processing is a central problem in artificial intelligence. The optimization of the combined cost of a network of local cost functions federates a variety of famous problems including CSP, SAT and Max-SAT but also optimization in stochastic variants such as Markov Random Fields and Bayesian networks. Exact solving methods for these problems typically include branch and bound and...
